Why Study Social & Policy Sciences at Bath?
Departmental reputation: with an excellent international reputation for the quality of its degree programmes and research, the Department of Social and Policy Sciences places great emphasis on high quality teaching.
Exciting environment: the Department was graded 5 in the UK Research Assessment Exercise. This means that our 300 undergraduates and thriving postgraduate community are taught by academics at the forefront of their field.
Flexibility: although our degrees allow students to specialise, they also allow considerable flexibility in order for students to develop their own intellectual interests, including units in Economics, Psychology, Politics, Management, Education and Modern Languages.
Options linked to Departmental expertise: options offered by the Department include health, aging and death, childhood, the family, globalisation, European policy, social movements, work relations, corporate power, social justice, criminal justice, sexual violence, sexuality, racism and the body.
The Degree Programmes
Sociology: Sociology is concerned with how society coheres, how social institutions develop and operate, and how societies change. The degree at Bath provides students with the analytical and methodological skills to study collective and individual behaviour.
Sociology with Human Resource Management: This degree combines the study of sociology with theory and practice in human resource management. The degree shares the core elements of the Sociology degree but also includes units from the School of Management, and a compulsory placement.
Social Policy and Administration: This degree is designed to enable students to analyse the new developments that are transforming the Welfare State. Bath places an emphasis on the concepts, issues and constraints that influence and shape policy; the theory and practice of social policy evaluation; and comparative analysis across Europe and internationally.
Sociology and Social Policy: This joint Honours degree provides an opportunity for students who want to combine the study of sociology and social policy.
Social Sciences: This degree is especially appropriate for students who, while interested in the social sciences in general, do not wish to specialise in one particular discipline.
The placement year
Our degrees can be studied over four years, with the third year spent on placement. Sociology and Social Policy students can take placements in commercial, voluntary or government organisations, or in a research setting. Students taking Sociology with Human Resources Management have a compulsory placement in personnel, training or human resource management departments, unless they have relevant work experience. Placements may be paid or unpaid.
