What is special about Bath Engineering Degrees?
All courses in the Department are 4-year MEng degrees. The first two years share a common core of basic engineering subjects. This provides a broad base of engineering, and personal and communication skills which allows students the flexibility to change their original choice of MEng option. In Years Three and Four students specialise in their chosen degree, taking a combination of core and optional modules, together with a group design exercise and a research project. The large number of lecturing staff gives a student/staff ratio of about 4:1 in the first year, which enables us to offer a wide range of options within the fields of engineering and management. It allows the opportunity to combine engineering with either French or German as an integrated course. These courses integrate teaching of the language with engineering, placing the emphasis on communication. Students may also elect to undertake an industrial placement, or an exchange at an American or Canadian university.
The placement year
Over 50% of our students elect to spend a period in industry during their degrees. This may be either a full year of paid employment following the second year of study ("The five-year sandwich") or a six-month period during year three. There is a member of staff responsible for industrial liaison and, at present, there are plenty of placements available in a wide range of companies including Shell, Ford, Motorola, British Airways, Hewlett Packard, Renault, Bosch, ABB-Alstom, Rolls Royce GmbH, Airbus and Siemens.
The decision to follow the sandwich course does not have to be made until the end of your first year but if you think you might enjoy this opportunity it would be a good idea to indicate your interest on your UCAS form by choosing the code for a sandwich course.

The degrees offered within the Department are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers or the Royal Aeronautical Society as complying with the academic requirements for chartered engineering status. Engineering graduates from Bath are highly sought after by UK and European industry and enjoy one of the top employment rates for Engineering degrees in the UK. Our graduates now work in a wide range of industries all over the world. Peter Lawrence, Chief Engineer of Diesel Engineering at the Ford Motor Company, comments "There is nothing 'ivory tower' about the Department. It is very focused on industry and its needs, even at student level." In 2006, 65% of our graduates went into full time employment and 15% continued in further study.
