Why study Mathematics?
Why study Statistics?

Mathematics is fundamental in understanding the world around us, and in drawing quantitative conclusions and testable predictions from scientific theories. Many mathematical notions have taken on lives of their own and are studied for their intrinsic elegance, yet continue to make unexpected contacts with science and technology.

Random phenomena are key to many interdisciplinary lines of inquiry. Models embodying randomness often unearth surprising yet insightful differences to their non-random counterparts. The introduction of randomness also provokes deep philosophical questions, requiring quantification, as to the accountability and practical implications of such models. A rigorous mathematical or statistical education develops an intellectual outlook in the student that is valuable in a variety of careers.

Our flexible programme begins with a common first year, after which students' curricula diverge according to their interests in pure and applied mathematics, probability and statistics. Some of our degrees even allow a substantial content of computing beyond the first year. A limited number of options from other departments are also possible, including Physics, and Management, which offers courses in accounting and finance.

We offer BSc degrees for students seeking employment or professional training on graduation, and a 4-year MMath for those with scientific and research ambitions, or wanting an in-depth course

The placement year

The BSc degrees are also available in 4-year format with a placement in Year 3, either at a European university or in industry.

The MMath allows the possibility of spending the third year at a European, North American or Australian university.

Placements at overseas universities are subject to availability and students' academic progress. Students who take industrial placements are frequently offered jobs after graduation by their placement employers.
