Why study Education at Bath?

The Department of Education offers a low student to staff ratio to ensure that every student receives the individual attention that s/he deserves. Units are taught and assessed by varied means corresponding to the nature of the subject. Students complete their degrees equipped with understandings and theories which enable them to reflect critically upon educational initiatives. We currently offer the following two new undergraduate programmes. They provide a suitable foundation for graduates to pursue careers or higher degrees in a range of specialisms.

BA (Hons.) Childhood, Youth and Education Studies

Recently there has been an increased UK Government focus upon all aspects of policy affecting children and young people. This degree offers students the opportunity to explore, in depth, some of the most challenging and fundamental issues concerning children and young people growing up in contemporary British society. The programme is taught by staff from both the Department of Education and the Department of Psychology, with high levels of expertise in these multi-disciplinary fields. It also includes an optional placement year in a professional setting. Students will thus be prepared to become knowledgeable and reflective actors in complex educational arenas.

BA (Hons.) Education and International Development

We are in an era of rapid global change. This degree encourages students to engage critically with the interrelationships between education, democracy, development and citizenship. To facilitate this learning, the programme takes a multidisciplinary approach to bring together the fields of education and international development. Units are taken in both the Department of Education and the Department of Economics and International Development and students are encouraged to undertake an optional placement year in a development context. This programme therefore aims to prepare students to become competent and reflective actors in educational fields within a global society. Both UK and overseas students are welcome to apply.

Placements

Students have the opportunity to spend up to twelve months on work placement between their second and final years of study. The experience of a placement allows students to consider more deeply their interests and preferences for subsequent academic work and future employment. Placements can be taken anywhere in the world, subject to the approval of the Department.
