Why study Bioscience at Bath?

The Department of Biology & Biochemistry prepares graduates to play vital roles as practical scientists, as interpreters of modern biology and as agents who also, in other ways, can make a real difference to our future. Many of our graduates go on to research careers, undertaking research degrees and further training to become experts in their field.

The Department is strongly committed to teaching. The quality of our teaching was recognised with top marks (24 out of 24) in the Quality Assurance Agency review in Molecular and Organismal Biosciences.

The Department is housed in a recently refurbished building with two newly completed extensions. We have well-equipped purpose-built laboratories providing excellent facilities for undergraduate teaching and research.

The Department’s active research profile feeds into the teaching, giving students the opportunity to explore the boundaries of knowledge with individuals who are pushing forward those boundaries. This provides a stimulating environment in which to study.

As an integrated life sciences department, we are well placed to offer a range of programmes and to share core areas across programmes. This sharing allows students the flexibility to switch between programmes up to the end of Year 1. Different routes (BSc or MBiol/MBiochem and placment options) through the programmes, some involving work experience, increase the choices available to students.

Placements

We have a long tradition as one of the country’s foremost providers of professional placements. Typically we arrange 120 placements each year, many of which are overseas. Our placements are in roles that bioscience graduates would undertake and are paid.
