Personal Welfare

At Bath, we are interested in both your academic and personal development. Each undergraduate is assigned a Personal Tutor, with regular meetings scheduled throughout the first year to review progress and sort out any difficulties. The Student Support Team provides support for your well-being and representation. There is also a wide range of specialist support services designed to provide information, advice, practical help and support. These include Resident Tutors, the Students’ Union Academic and Welfare Centre (AWARE), the Counselling Service, Student Money Service, International Office, Chaplaincy, Learning Support Service, Careers Advisory Service, Childcare Services and the Health Centre. These services are described throughout the prospectus and more information is available at: www.bath.ac.uk/students/

Medical Centre
The University Medical Centre in situated on Campus with easy access for the University population. It is an independent National Health Service practice providing a full range of health care services to patients who live within the practice area and who choose to register with the practice. We provide a personalised, caring and confidential service, developed to cater for the needs of the staff, students and families of the University. We work closely with the other University student support services. Most services are free but there are charges for prescriptions (unless exempt) and some non-NHS services.

We encourage all new students to register with a doctor. To register with us please download a registration form from our website (www.umcbath.co.uk/), complete it and bring it with you to the Medical Centre.

It is important to note the UK Department of Health recommends all first year University students of any age that have not been immunised should arrange to get vaccinated with Meningitis C from their doctor. For more information see www.meningitis.org/.

Childcare Services
Westwood Nursery provides high quality day care on campus for 48 children from the age of 6 months to school entry age. The Nursery is open for 48 weeks of the year but student parents can have the choice of a term-time only place.

Help may be available from a Childcare Grant for those who find the fees a problem (contact the Student Money Service for more information). Other childcare services include a half-term and vacation playscheme. Student parents are represented on the Childcare Advisory Group, which meets once a term.

For enquiries about the Nursery and/or to register on the waiting list, please contact the Childcare Services Manager. Places in the Nursery are subject to availability.

Counselling
The counsellors provide an accessible, confidential and professional service to all students, both in individual and group sessions. It is usually possible to choose either a male or female counsellor with whom to discuss any issues of concern in a relaxed and non-judgemental setting. Student worries and concerns include study difficulties, personal and relationship problems, homesickness, eating issues, addictive behaviour, etc. These may be addressed through single sessions, short term support, or counselling over a longer period. Students registered with the University Medical Centre may also be referred by a general practitioner to one of the specialist practice counsellors. www.bath.ac.uk/counselling/

Mature Students
Mature students may experience the transition to University in many different ways compared to the majority of younger students. Both the University and the Students’ Union support services provide information, advice and support for mature students. The Students’ Union AWARE centre publishes a Mature Students’ Guide every year.

Chaplaincy
The University Chaplaincy Centre, in the heart of the campus, welcomes people of all faiths or none. A Chaplain is on call for all students and staff every day. The ecumenical team works closely with leaders of several faiths. The Chaplaincy offers an active programme of daily prayer, worship, public lectures, seminars and discussion groups, and special trips. Also on campus there are rooms, with washing facilities, set aside for Muslim prayers (Norwood House Level 4 South End). There are active Christian, Muslim, Baha’i and Jewish student societies on campus. Contact the University Chaplain, Angela Berners-Wilson, for a list of these, and all the churches and faith communities in Bath, or visit the Chaplaincy website.
