Living at Bath
Am I guaranteed University accommodation as a
first year?
University accommodation is guaranteed for one academic
session to all new-to-Bath, full-time students in their first year
studying Bachelor’s and Master’s undergraduate programmes on
the Claverton Campus, provided students have accepted their
course offer and applied online for their accommodation by 3
September 2008.
Where are the residences?
On campus all accommodation complexes are located within 5-
10 minutes’ walk of the academic buildings. The majority stretch
across the northern boundary with many rooms enjoying lovely
rural views. The various off-site complexes are conveniently
situated in the city centre, close to shops, bars, restaurants and
the vibrant nightlife! Direct buses run frequently and until 3am
during term-time.
What choice will I have?
We offer a broad range of room types to suit all budgets. All firstyear
complexes are similarly organised with 5-18 single study
bedrooms grouped around a communal self-catering kitchen.
The majority of kitchen groups are mixed but you can choose all
male or all female if you prefer. Full details of the choices available will be provided in the Accommodation Brochure prior to the
application process. The demand for certain residences is very
high, so we cannot guarantee to fulfil all preferences, but every
effort will be made to ensure that the fee level and room type
are comparable to those of your preferred option.
Due to be completed by October 2008, our brand new campus complex, Woodland Court, will offer premium ensuite accommodation; further details will be available shortly on our web pages.
How and when do I apply?
Apply online at the beginning of June in your year of entry (date
to be confirmed for 2008, but keep an eye on our web pages
for further updated information). To apply online, you will need
your student (UCAS) number, date of birth and your
accommodation preferences.
Allocation is generally on a first-come, first-served basis, as well as according to the student’s course offer status, which means that later entrants may be housed in off-site complexes or in initially shared or temporary rooms. Students who apply after 3 September may be required to find temporary short-term accommodation in the private sector until spaces become available in University accommodation.
When will I receive my accommodation contract?
Students with an unconditional offer will receive details of their
room allocation with a contract by the end of August; those with
a conditional offer will be allocated their room and sent a contract
by email during September.
Can I have data connection?
Data connection is available in all rooms, allowing students to
connect their own computers to the University’s network and the
Internet, the cost of which is included in the accommodation
fees: www.bath.ac.uk/bucs/networking/resnet/
Does my room have a telephone?
In our continual efforts to provide students with access to state-ofthe-
art communications and integrated entertainment services,
the University of Bath has teamed with INUK Networks to bring
you Freewire.
The Freewire Telephone service, with a handset now available in all enhanced study bedrooms, lets you make FREE calls to any of your fellow residents within the University of Bath’s halls of residence or to anyone on the Freewire Network. If your bedroom does not have a Freewire handset, you can still access the Freewire service by downloading to your computer the free and easy-to-use software that lets you enjoy the same benefits via a “softphone”. For further information, please visit www.freewiretv.com.
What do I need to bring?
All bedlinen is provided in on-campus residences but you should
bring your own towels, cutlery, cookware and crockery. In off-site
residences, bedlinen is NOT provided but we provide the duvet
and pillows, in order to ensure that they fulfil fire and furnishing
standards. Full information about what to bring is available in our
Living on Campus/Living off Campus brochures:
- www.bath.ac.uk/accommodation/pdf/livingoffcampus.pdf
Can I bring my car?
It is a condition of residence that students do not have the use
of, or keep a motor vehicle, in connection with their use of the
accommodation. Permits will only be granted in exceptional
circumstances, such as on medical grounds.
What about welfare and security?
Resident Tutors live alongside students in the halls of residence.
They ensure the provision and maintenance of a high standard of
welfare, health and safety, social activities and good order for
students living in University residential accommodation, both on
and off campus.
The on-campus Security Office is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is also an off-campus Security service operating during the evenings and at weekends.
Can you offer me family accommodation?
We have a limited range of family accommodation available
mainly suitable for couples without children. Please contact the
Student Accommodation team for further details. We strongly
advise you not to bring your family to Bath until you have secured
suitable accommodation for the duration of your stay.
How do I seek private sector accommodation if I do not
want to live in University residence?
An information and advice service is provided for students who
may prefer to live in private accommodation and for students in
their second and subsequent years. An up-to-date listing of
properties available can be accessed through our database:
www.bathstudentpad.co.uk
You can expect to pay approximately £65 - £75 per week for a room in a shared flat or house; utility bills will be in addition to this. Bath has a good supply of private sector accommodation; over 1600 properties are accredited by the local Council, and numbers keep growing!
Restaurants, Delis and Bars
For those occasions when you do not wish to self-cater, the
University and Students’ Union offer several very good value
alternatives open from breakfast until late. The food mix is
extensive and includes a wide variety of traditional as well as
international dishes, healthy eating options, salad bars,
delicatessen counters and sandwich services. There are several
bars on campus, offering a range of entertainment and
promotions. There is also a well-stocked grocery shop for those
who wish to cater for themselves.
