The English Language Centre
The English Language Centre provides English language support for the University’s international student population as well as a range of specialised courses to prepare students for their study at Bath.
In-sessional Courses for registered students of
the University of Bath
All international students are entitled to three hours per week of
in-sessional classes, free of charge.
- Academic Writing:
develops students’ essay-writing, report-writing and dissertation-writing skills. - Spoken English:
develops students’ skills in giving presentations, listening to lectures and participating in seminars, and improves their everyday English. - Reading and Vocabulary:
develops students’ reading skills and helps to increase their general and subject-specific vocabulary. - English for Business:
develops Business students’ spoken and written English using appropriate business materials. - Cambridge English Examination Classes:
prepares students for Cambridge First Certificate, Advanced English and Proficiency in English examinations. - Effective Writing for Native Speakers of English:
develops students’ essay writing skills and helps them raise the standard of their degree course work.
Pre-Study English Courses
English for University Study
An academic English course for students needing to improve their
English and study skills before starting their studies. The courses
are 10, 21 and 32 weeks in length, running from October to June
(minimum IELTS entry 4.5).
Pre-Sessional Courses in English for Academic Purposes and
Study Skills
Intensive pre-study preparation courses for students needing to
improve their academic English and study skills before starting
their studies. The courses are 5 and 10 weeks in length, running
from July to September (minimum IELTS entry 5.5).
IELTS Exam Preparation and Testing
The ELC is an official IELTS test-centre. IELTS tests are held at the
University of Bath at least once a month.
Cambridge Examinations
The ELC is an official test centre for the following examinations:
First Certificate English (FCE),
Certificate in Advanced English (CAE),
Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
