Students with disabilities and/or learning difficulties
The University has a positive policy of supporting students with disabilities, and welcomes applications from those with disabilities, dyslexia, specific learning difficulties and additional support needs. If you require a Prospectus or another publication in large print or in electronic or other format, please let us know.
Applications
We are very happy to receive applications from disabled people and encourage you to enter your disability or condition in the appropriate place on your application form as this will enable us to send you information and advice promptly. It will also enable us to consider your application in an appropriate context and to arrange appropriate support for any visit or interview.
The Graduate Office can advise you on the structure and content of your programme of study and on the support available within your Department or Faculty. We recommend that you contact the Learning Support Service to ensure you receive comprehensive information on the University support for disabled students. If you are an international student, please see also our advice for International Students with Disabilities.
Students from the UK are entitled to apply to their local education authority for an assessment of their support needs for the disabled students allowance. More information is available from the Bath Assessment Centre, a specialist needs assessment and technology training centre for disabled people. We have particular expertise in providing a professional, impartial, study needs assessment service to support applications for the Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA).
Campus Access
The Bath Campus provides a compact site, centred around a parade with level pedestrian access. All major buildings have wheelchair access via ramps and lifts, and are equipped with wheelchair accessible toilets. The University has undertaken an access audit and there is a major programme in place to develop campus access for disabled people. Further information on current work is available from the Estates Department and the Learning Support Service can advise in case of doubt or concern. See also the online campus maps, including an access map.
Accommodation
All residential accommodation on campus is grouped around the teaching and Students’ Union buildings. Purpose-built accommodation with ground floor access is available and there are accessible rooms in new accommodation on and off campus. Resident Tutors live in campus accommodation and are good sources of help and information.
Individual Needs
The University offers support with arranging an assessment of your needs, and in making alternative arrangements for examinations and other assessments. You will have access to our Learning Support computer suite in the Library and Learning Centre. The facilities include voice activated software, page reading scanner, magnification and text management software. Individual support provision such as tuition, notetaking and academic support, are purchased by you either through the Disabled Students’ Allowance (see above) or funded by support from your home environment if you are an international student.
The Learning Support Service can support you in administering the recommendations made in your assessment of needs.
The University has a range of facilities available to support you, including a Student Adviser, Learning Support, a team of specialist part-time tutors, weekly workshops and drop-in sessions for advice. There are also three designated rooms in the Library and Learning Centre equipped with computers, printers, scanners and specialist hardware and software. Your personal tutor will support you in arranging your Department support, which may include enabling technology access in your Department provided through Bath University Computing Services.
Support
We hope that you will contact the Learning Support Service at the earliest opportunity. The Service will provide initial screening for study difficulties, identification for specific learning difficulties, and general advice and administering access to appropriate learning support and personal care. The Service is here to offer expert information and advice, support for Open Day and interview visits, guidance on campus access, as well as administering your ongoing support throughout the duration of your studies. We will treat all enquiries on a confidential basis and can offer assistance with arranging assessment of learning support needs, including applications for the Disabled Students Allowance.
Prospective students are warmly encouraged to visit the campus at an early stage.
