Accommodation and Hospitality Services
Am I guaranteed University accommodation as a new postgraduate?
Unaccompanied postgraduate students, classified as "overseas" for fees purposes, and who are new to Bath, will be offered accommodation in University residence for at least one year, starting from September, provided it has been applied for no later than 3 September. If you arrive after the start of the academic session, residence will be offered subject to availability.
Postgraduates who are classified as “Home/EU” for fees purposes are not guaranteed University residence. However, new accommodation scheduled for completion by September 2008 means that we expect to house more “Home/EU” postgraduates in the future. Please apply to go on a waiting list and we will inform you of availability within one month of your housing application.
If you wish to look into private sector lettings you can visit our web pages after applying for the appropriate password.
Where are the residences?
On-campus accommodation for postgraduates is available at Polden Court, Osborne House and Woodland Court (mainly ensuite rooms). However, most postgraduates will be housed in our off-site complexes.
The off-site complexes offer a variety of room types to suit all budgets, all on a self-catering basis. Carpenter House has standard rooms with washbasins in kitchen groups of 7-9, while Clevelands, Thornbank Gardens and Pulteney Court comprise variable size cluster flats and each complex has its own individual character. Many rooms have en-suite facilities, others share communal shower/bathroom facilities, and all are grouped around a communal kitchen/dining room.
The various off-site residences are all conveniently situated in the city centre, close to shops, bars, restaurants and the vibrant nightlife! Direct buses to campus run frequently and until 2:00am during term-time.
What choice will I have?
We offer a broad range of room types to suit all budgets (see chart below) and nearly 50% of all rooms have individual en-suite facilities. All residences are similarly organised with 3-10 single study bedrooms grouped around a self-catering communal kitchen. The majority of kitchen groups are mixed but you can choose all male or all female if you prefer. The demand for certain residences is very high, so we cannot guarantee to fulfil all preferences, but every effort will be made to ensure that the fee level and room type are comparable to those of your preferred option.

When will I receive my accommodation offer?
Room offers are made from early July throughout the summer normally in date order of application. If you have not received your room offer by the second week of September, please contact the Student Accommodation Office.
Can I have data connection?
All residences are networked to the University campus LAN. The basic cost of this service is included in the residential fees. Click for further details.
Does my room have a telephone?
In our continual efforts to provide students with access to state-of- the-art communications and integrated entertainment services, University of Bath has teamed up with INUK Networks to bring you Freewire.
Freewire Telephone
The Freewire Telephone service, with a handset now available in many of our study bedrooms, lets you make free calls to any of your fellow residents within the University of Bath’s halls of residence or to anyone on the Freewire Network. The system is based on the latest VolP technology and provides you with the following benefits:
- Free calls to other Freewire Telephone users anytime, anywhere in the world
- Free subscription to the service for friends and family
- Free voicemail, teleconferencing and call screening facilities
- Extremely competitive rates when calling other networks and mobile phones
What do I need to bring?
On-campus, all bed linen is provided but in off-campus residences we
provide only the duvet and pillows, in order to ensure that they fulfil fire
and furnishing standards. Bed linen packs can be purchased on arrival or
you can bring your own bedlinen to fit a single bed (approximately
90cm x 200cm).
You will need to bring personal towels, crockery, cookware and cutlery,
but these can be purchased very reasonably in local supermarkets if you
are travelling to Bath from overseas.
Can I bring my car?
Bath has a compact campus and the city is small; a car really is not
necessary due to good local transport services. University Regulations
will not allow you to have a car if you live in University accommodation.
Permits will only be granted in exceptional circumstances, such as on
medical grounds. More information
What about welfare and security?
Resident tutors live in each complex and are available to give advice and guidance to all residents. They help foster a good living environment with special regard to student welfare, discipline and safety, as well as organising lots of social activities! The Security Office on the Parade is also open 24 hours for the benefit of all students.
Can you offer me family accommodation?
Family accommodation in Bath can be expensive and it is strongly recommended that students with families do not bring their spouses and/or children to Bath until they have found suitable accommodation. The Student Accommodation Office will always do its best to provide new students with temporary single accommodation while they seek family housing.
How do I seek private accommodation if I do not want to live in University residence?
An information and advice service is provided for students who may prefer to live in private accommodation and for students in their second and subsequent years. We maintain a web database of self-catering lodgings, bed-sits, flats and houses, which are available to rent in the private sector and we can help and advise on tenancy agreements and housing contracts.
You can expect to pay approximately £68 – £78 per week for a room in a shared flat, heating, electricity, gas and telephone bills will be in addition. Bath has a good supply of private sector accommodation with over 1600 properties accredited by the local council and numbers keep growing!
The Students’ Union organise a house-hunting weekend during August to help new postgraduates meet each other and form groups for house-sharing. Please contact aware@bath.ac.uk

The food mix is extensive and includes a wide variety of traditional as well as international dishes, healthy eating options, salad bars, delicatessen counters and sandwich services. There are several bars on campus offering a range of entertainment and promotions. More information
