Engaging our Postgraduates

Postgraduate Centre – Bath’s major new investment in its postgraduates

The University is currently making a major investment in its postgraduate community through the building of a brand new Graduate Centre scheduled for completion in 2010. The Centre will be the social, training and academic centre for postgraduate life at the university, and will include postgraduate-specific seminar rooms, Postgraduate Association offices, and a postgraduate social area. This investment demonstrates the University’s long-term commitment to its postgraduates.

Postgraduate Conference – three years on and the Bath Postgraduate Conference is going strong

In June 2008, the Postgraduate Association held the third Bath Postgraduate Conference. The event was a great success, and gave Bath postgraduates the chance to present their work and hear the work of others across the University. The Conference presents postgraduates at Bath with a unique opportunity to get beyond their subject areas into a productive dialogue across disciplines.

Bath Alumni Discount – Bath's investment in its postgraduate and undergraduate alumni

All Bath Alumni are now entitled to a 10% discount on their postgraduate course fees. In launching the scheme in June 2006, Vice-Chancellor Professor Glynis Breakwell said: "The University of Bath has a rapidly expanding population of alumni. We are very proud of their achievements and are delighted that so many remain in contact with us. Approaching our 40th anniversary seemed a very fitting opportunity to find a way to recognise their importance to us. We hope our discount initiative will enable more of our alumni to benefit from postgraduate study and to go on to even greater success".

The discount scheme also means that for those undertaking a masters degree at Bath there is a great incentive to stay on and study for a PhD: the 10% discount applies to PhD fees for those who have done a Masters programme at Bath. So for an overseas fee payer this could mean a saving of between £3000 and £4000 over the three years of a PhD course.

Postgraduate Training Opportunities – learn about more than just your subject at Bath

Postgraduates at the University of Bath now have more training opportunities than ever. As well as extensive departmental, school and faculty programmes, the University provides an exciting range of training opportunities through its staff development and IT training units. SORTED (the Students’ Union training organisation) is also constantly expanding the postgraduate training it offers. So a postgraduate student at Bath can now learn how to do anything from speak Mandarin Chinese or French, to presenting themselves and their work to best advantage, to using Dreamweaver to create great websites.

For postgraduates with teaching responsibilities, there is now an intensive teaching development programme. Students who recently took part in the programme said: “this is a fantastic introduction for postgrads who are teaching” and “this course really improved my confidence”. The variety of opportunities on offer to postgraduates at Bath was commended by the QAA (the national Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education) in its review of research postgraduate provision, and the University’s ongoing commitment to this important aspect of postgraduate study was reflected in the appointment in 2007 of a full-time Postgraduate Skills Training Co-ordinator.

Postgraduate Welcome Party - Bath welcomes its postgraduates in style

Bath welcomes all its new postgraduates in style each year in a centrepiece party in the city centre. The party was most recently held in the Bath Pavilion, a lovely location next to the river Avon in the heart of Georgian Bath, and included a sit-down meal, salsa dancing, a juggling show and DJs. The University looks forward each year to welcoming its postgraduates in similar style.

The Postgraduate Association

Your time at the University of Bath will encompass a diverse range of opportunities beyond study that can only enhance your learning experience.

The Postgraduate Association (PGA) is here to help you access the myriad of extra-curricular and academic opportunities on offer at Bath. It also represents you and your needs as a postgraduate student to the University.

Run by postgraduate students, elected by their peers, the PGA organises regular social events, provides information on other areas of postgraduate study and can help solve any problems that may arise during your time here. For more information visit our website.
