Overview
Students are expected to carry out supervised research at the leading edge of their chosen subject, which must then be written up as a substantial thesis. The transfer from MPhil to PhD is subject to students passing an assessment process, which normally involves submission of written work and a transfer seminar. The final stage of the PhD degree is the oral or viva voce examination, in which students are required to defend the thesis to a Board of Examiners.
Key features of the MPhil/PhD programme include:
- an opportunity to undertake original, in-depth research in subject areas of specialism within the Department, including social policy, sociology and social work
- internationally-renowned academics along with many student-led initiatives contributing to a vibrant research community
- a multi-disciplinary approach reflected in cross-departmental projects, for example with the Department of Economics & International Development
- availability of research training, recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council
