MA in Interpreting and Translating

Qualifications and durations
Pathways

Students may follow one of two possible paths:

Path 1 allows students with English as their A language to offer two other languages - from Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish - working only into English.

Path 2 allows students whose A language is either English or one of the other languages listed above to offer English plus one of those languages, working in both directions between the two. One of the languages offered must be the student’s A language.

Overview

This programme is designed to prepare linguists for careers as professional interpreters and/or translators.

It has done this most successfully over nearly four decades, and its graduates are to be found working in language services throughout the world.

All students follow a core programme involving professional translation and simultaneous, consecutive and liaison interpreting, supplemented by background sessions on topics such as international law and economics.

A number of options are available in the second semester to allow students to specialise more in either discipline.

The MA is awarded for a 15,000-word dissertation/project submitted after successful completion of the taught programme.

Academic entry requirements

Good honours degree.

Path 1: degree level competence in both languages.

Path 2: degree or equivalent qualification in English; applicants whose A language is English should demonstrate degree level attainment in the second language.

Unique funding opportunities

Students who have been accepted for the programme and who wish to be considered for AHRC funding will be ranked by the University: those whom we wish to be considered by the AHRC for an award will then be contacted and asked to complete a from. The AHRC will then inform the University of funding allocated at a later date and students will then be contacted. Students may also apply for an award under the bursary scheme for trainee interpreters operated by the European Commission.

Scholarships may be awarded to outstanding overseas applicants.
