MA/Diploma in European Cinema Studies

Qualifications and durations

Both programmes offer flexible part-time pathways over a maximum of 5 years.

Overview

The programme offers a uniquely integrated approach, in which the specificities of European national cinemas (including, for example, those of East Europe, Iceland, Greece, and Turkey) are explored within the context of contemporary European culture and society. It engages creatively and intellectually with wide-ranging theoretical, historical, and technical concepts, and aims to develop advanced critical, analytical, and practical digital film-making skills, and to provide a comprehensive understanding of the European film industry in relation to issues of production, distribution, and exhibition. There are regular visits by professionals from all areas of film and media, and opportunities for work experience and creative involvement with local and regional arts organisations.

Academic entry requirements

A good honours degree or equivalent in a related discipline (e.g. Languages, Film or Communication Studies, etc), although alternative background and experience are also welcomed. Proficiency in one European language in addition to English may be useful but is not essential.

English requirements

IELTS 6.5 (with not less than 6.0 in each of the four components).
TOEFL 580 (paper-based test) or 237 (computer-based test) with a score of not less than 4 in TWE or 92 (internetbased test) with not less than 21 in each of the components.
