Overview
The MPhil/PhD programme provides an opportunity to undertake original research under the themes of ‘Poverty & Wellbeing’, ‘Governance, Policy & Politics’, ‘Markets & Microfinance’, ‘Social Structure, Religion & Cultural Identities’ and ‘Environment & Sustainable Development’ (see the Centre for Development Studies). Development related research entailing collaboration with those in other disciplines and fields represented in the University (for example, economics, social policy, and education) are also encouraged.
World-class supervision and weekly student-led seminars contribute to a close-knit and vibrant research community.
Full-time ESRC studentships and University of Bath stipends are available. More information about funding
Unique funding opportunities
A small number of ESRC awards with 1+3 option to combine a doctorate with the taught Masters in Research (International Development) are available each year. Preferred fields as indicated above. Applications for CASE awards also welcome. A small number of three year university scholarships are also usually available, and likely to entail collaboration with other Departments. Deadlines are usually mid-February.
Most students are registered in the first instance for the degree of MPhil – the MPhil includes a taught course component in year one. Students are expected to carry out supervised research at the leading edge of their chosen subject, which must then be written-up as a substantial thesis. The transfer from MPhil to PhD is subject to students passing an assessment process, which involves submission of a substantial portion of written work and an oral examination.
The final stage of the PhD degree is the viva voce examination, in which students are required to defend their thesis to a Board of Examiners.
