Minimum non-graduate qualifications acceptable for admission to the University of Bath
(Except where otherwise stated, these conditions refer to candidates for the Degree of Master only)
Architecture and Civil Engineering
- A Diploma of Architecture of a recognised School of Architecture.
- Membership by examination of a recognised Professional Institution of at least Associate status.
- A relevant postgraduate diploma.
- Extended and responsible experience in a relevant field in industry, in teaching, or in a government establishment, together with authorship of technical papers or other work of an acceptable academic standard, e.g. design work.
- The Diploma in Construction Management/Property Development awarded by Hong Kong University is acceptable as a qualification for registration for the MSc in International Construction Management.
Chemical Engineering
- Passes at a satisfactory level in either of the following examinations:
Institution of Chemical Engineers Part III
Institution of Mechanical Engineers Part III or - Membership of recognised professional institutions of at least graduate status or a relevant professional qualification acceptable to the Board of Studies.
- Extended and responsible experience at an appropriate standard in a relevant field acceptable to the Board of Studies.
Chemistry
- Membership of recognised professional institutions of at least graduate status or a relevant professional qualification acceptable to the Board of Studies.
- Extended and responsible experience at an appropriate standard in a relevant field acceptable to the Board of Studies.
Education
For entry on to the MA in Education, candidates should normally possess either (a) an advanced diploma in education and at least two years of relevant experience; or (b) a teaching qualification (gained after at least the equivalent of two satisfactory years of higher education) and at least two years of relevant experience; or (c) be graduates of an approved university, or holders of a degree awarded by the CNAA (or of certain other approved graduate equivalent qualifications) and at least two years of relevant experience.
Electronic and Electrical Engineering

- Membership by examination of a recognised Professional Institution of at least Associate or Graduate status; or
- A recognised College Diploma or Service College qualification.
(a) or (b) above to be coupled with either: - At least two years relevant experience in industry, in teaching or in a government establishment; or
- The successful completion of a preliminary course acceptable to the Board of Studies.
- Relevant qualifications acceptable to the Board of Studies and which shall not be less than the qualifications approved by Senate for the purposes of the general entrance requirements for first degree courses, coupled with:
- At least two years relevant experience in industry, in teaching or in a government establishment; and
- The successful completion of a preliminary course of directed study approved by the Board of Studies including attendance at such classes as may be required for a period prescribed by the Board of Studies which shall not be less than two academic years. In the case of candidates with extensive professional experience extending over five or more years the candidate may, with the approval of the Board of Studies, be permitted to pursue a reduced course extending over a minimum of one academic year. For the purposes of this regulation the course prescribed will be deemed to have been successfully completed only when the candidate has attended and passed a full Honours set of final year BSc degree option courses.
- Extended and responsible experience in a relevant field in industry, in teaching, or in a government establishment together with authorship of technical papers of an acceptable academic standard.
European Studies and Modern Languages
The Department of European Studies and Modern Languages, in considering applications, will take the following into account:
Extended and responsible experience in a relevant field in commerce, or industry, or in teaching, or in a government establishment, together with authorship of papers or other work of an acceptable academic standard, e.g. published translation.
Management
- A relevant postgraduate diploma (passed at the appropriate level); or
- A relevant professional qualification together with papers passed at an appropriate standard if required by the appropriate Head of Group; or
- Extended and responsible experience in a relevant field of industry, teaching or a government establishment with authorship of papers of an acceptable academic standard.
Mathematical Sciences
- Membership of recognised professional institutions of at least graduate status as a result of examination.
- The following qualifications are acceptable for admission to a preliminary course in preparation for courses leading to a Masters Degree.
- BTEC Higher National Qualifications in an appropriate subject with at least five merits in designated modules where appropriate.
- Equivalent qualifications taken prior to 1986.
- Extended and responsible experience in a relevant field in industry, in teaching or a government establishment, together with authorship of technical papers of an acceptable academic standard.
- For taught MSc only, the Vordiplom of a German University with mention “gut” or “sehr gut”.
Pharmacy and Pharmacology
- The Pharmaceutical Chemist Qualifying Examination (under regulations for persons registered as ‘students’ on and after 1 March 1958, and who have undertaken a three year fulltime course of study).
- Membership of the Institute of Biology. This qualification, if obtained by examination is accepted as the equivalent of a first or second class Honours degree for the purposes of Regulation 18.
- Extended and responsible experience in a relevant field in industry, teaching or government establishment, or in some branch of medicine or medical science, together with authorship of scientific or medical papers.
School for Health
- MPhil degrees only
MPhil/PhD degrees require a minimum entry of an undergraduate degree, however other applications may be considered on a case-by-case basis. - MSc (Healthcare Informatics, Healthcare Information Governance) only
A special admissions route is available for candidates with experience but no formal qualifications. - Professional Doctorate in Health only
In some cases, individual practitioners who have been involved in practice-based research and may have built up significant experience and expertise in particular research methodologies and approaches may elect to submit a portfolio of evidence for examination that demonstrates that the applicant is capable of demonstrating the learning outcomes of a specific M-level unit of the first phase of the programme.
Physics
- Membership of recognised professional institutions of at least graduate status or a relevant professional qualification acceptable to the Board of Studies.
- Part II Graduateship by examination of the Institute of Physics and the Physical Society, or the achievement of a similar standard in the corresponding examination of another recognised professional institution.
- Extended and responsible experience at an appropriate standard in a relevant field acceptable to the Board of Studies.
Psychology
Our MPhil/PhD programme will consider applications on a caseby-
case basis where candidates have an appropriate combination
of the following:
- A relevant diploma passed out at a high level (eg a Higher
National Diploma). - Published papers or other academic work of a high standard.
- Relevant professional qualifications.
- Extended and responsible experience in a relevant field.
Social Sciences
- A relevant postgraduate diploma or Higher National Diploma passed at the appropriate level.
- A relevant professional qualification together with papers passed at an appropriate standard if required by the appropriate Head of Group.
- Extended and responsible experience in a relevant field together with authorship of papers of an acceptable academic standard.
Note: In all cases the qualifications must have been obtained in a subject or subjects that are relevant to the proposed course of study.
