Applying for admission to postgraduate study at the University of Bath
Notes to help you to complete the application form. Please complete all the sections clearly and legibly.
1 Your personal details
Please complete this in as much detail as possible. If you complete the section marked ‘correspondence address’, please ensure that you tell us the dates when you are at that address. Please also ensure that you give your full name in the appropriate boxes.
2 How do you intend to study?
Please look carefully at the list of courses available before you fill in this section. Note that most taught courses start in October, but that you may begin research in most departments at any time during the year.
Please be very careful to specify exactly how and what you wish to study. If you are unclear, your application may be delayed. Please specify the exact names of the course(s) you wish to apply for as stated in the Postgraduate Prospectus, or, if you are applying for research, please specify the Department or School.
Please do not use this form to apply for the PGCE, the MBA or the Euromasters programmes. Please indicate the pathway and languages chosen if you are applying for the MA in Interpreting and Translating, and the languages chosen for the MA in Translation and Professional Language Skills.
3 Finance
Please tell us in as much detail as possible how you intend to fund yourself.
4 Your education
You should include all your education from age 17 onwards. Tell us about your A levels or equivalent qualifications, and also any degree or other qualification that you have completed, or are due to complete (please include the anticipated date of completion).
If your degree is from a country outside the UK, please give the EXACT title of the qualification as it is known in the country where it is offered. Please do not try to describe it in terms of the UK system.
Please enclose original certificates/transcripts or copies authenticated by the awarding body for all University-level qualifications that you have obtained. An authenticated copy is a photocopy marked with the stamp or seal of the awarding institution, attested as true copy of the original and signed by an appropriate officer of that institution.
5 Your professional experience
Tell us about all the jobs you have done.
6 Your English proficiency
If your native language is not English, please tell us about your English language qualifications. It is very important that students are able to understand and use English well, in order to benefit as much as possible from their time at Bath. The English language requirements for each course are given in the prospectus.
7 Research interests/reasons for applying
Please tell as much as possible in this section. You should enclose your full research proposal if you have one. Applicants to the Department of Biology & Biochemistry should contact the Department for advice on completing this section before submitting an application.
8 Further Information
If you wish you may include additional information in support of your application. Please enclose extra sheets with this form.
9 Referees
You will find two copies of a reference form with the application form. You should send these to two people who know you well in either an academic or a work capacity: at least one of them must have taught you and must be able to tell us about the standard of your academic work. Both referees should return their signed references to you in a sealed envelope with their signature across the seal. You should send these unopened with the application form to the University. At least one reference must be sent for an application to be considered. A second reference will be required before an offer of a place can be confirmed.
Each reference form should be authenticated with an official stamp of the referee’s institution.
Please note that we CANNOT accept references/degree documents/TOEFL certificates submitted by email or fax.
10 Equal opportunities monitoring
Please complete this section to help us implement our equal opportunities policy. The information you provide will be treated in confidence and will not be used as part of the selection process.
11 How did you hear about Bath?
It is very helpful for us to know how you heard about the University of Bath, so that we can make the level of information we provide even better.
12 Special needs
If you have any special needs, please tell us about them here. You are strongly advised to contact the Learning Support Office to discuss your needs.
13 Checklist
Use this to tell us what you are enclosing with your application.
14 Criminal convictions
To help the University of Bath reduce the risk of harm or injury to its students caused by the criminal behaviour of other students, we must know about any relevant criminal convictions that an applicant may have.
Relevant criminal convictions are only those convictions for offences against the person, whether of a violent or sexual nature, and convictions for offences involving unlawfully supplying controlled drugs or substances where the conviction concerns commercial drug dealing or trafficking. Convictions that are spent (as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974) are not considered to be relevant and you should not reveal them (but see the next paragraph).
If you are applying for courses in teaching, health, social work and courses involving work with children or vulnerable adults, you must tell us about any criminal convictions, including spent sentences and cautions (including verbal cautions) and bind-over orders.
Courses in teaching, health, social work and courses involving work with children or vulnerable adults For these courses, you must tell us in Section 14 of the Application Form if any of the following statements apply to you:
- I have a criminal conviction
- I have a spent criminal conviction
- I have a caution (including a verbal caution)
- I have a bind-over order
- I am serving a prison sentence for a criminal conviction
If statement e applies to you then you must also give the prison address as your postal address on page 1 of your application and a senior prison officer must support your application.
PGCE students are required to have a CRB Enhanced Disclosure certificate before registering on the PGCE programme.
All other courses
For these courses, you must tell us in Section 14 of the Application Form if either of the following statements apply to you:
- I have a relevant criminal conviction that is not spent
- I am serving a prison sentence for a relevant criminal conviction
If statement b applies to you then you must also give the prison address as your postal address on page 1 of your application and a senior prison officer must support your application.
Applicants who tick ‘yes’ in Section 14 of the Application Form will not be automatically excluded from the application process but we may want to consider the application further or ask for more information before making a decision.
If you are convicted of a relevant criminal offence after you have applied, you must inform us and we may then need to ask you for further information.
15 Declaration
Please make sure that you sign the form. Your application cannot be accepted without your signature.
