Information

How to apply

You can apply online or download a copy of the application form in PDF or WORD format. Alternatively, you can contact the person named in the appropriate Departmental entry, and an application pack will be sent to you. Please do not submit the same application twice - use either the online OR the paper application form.

Submitting your application

Send a completed application form together with the two completed reference forms (sealed in envelopes with the referee’s signature across the seal), original or authenticated copies of your degree certificates and/or transcripts, and (if your first language is not English) original or authenticated copies of your IELTS, TOEFL or other English language qualification, to the address given on the application form. Please note that we expect an authenticated copy to be a photocopy of the original marked with the stamp or seal of the awarding institution and attested as a true copy of the original and duly signed by an appropriate officer of that institution.

Candidates intending to apply for a research degree are strongly advised to contact the Department before submitting an application, in order to discuss the proposed area of research with the Director of Postgraduate Studies.

If you have any general questions about the University, please contact the Graduate Office.

Applications for the PGCE

Applicants to the PGCE (teacher training) must apply through the Graduate Teacher Training Registry (GTTR), NOT directly to the University. The address to write to is:

All PGCE students are required to be in possession of a Criminal Records Bureau Enhanced Disclosure before the start of the course. The University’s Policy on Ex-Offenders is available from the Graduate Office.

The offer letter

If you receive an offer letter, please check any conditions that are specified: it is likely that you will be required to have been awarded any outstanding qualifications satisfactorily before your place is confirmed. The University is rigorous in its entry requirements for the benefit of its students – a postgraduate course is a significant personal and financial undertaking and we make every effort to avoid students struggling to derive the maximum possible benefit from a course because of academic or English language deficiencies.

English Language Requirements

The normal minimum requirement for non-native English speakers is 6.5 in the IELTS test (Academic English); 580 in the paper-based TOEFL test, 237 in the computer-based test and 92 in the internet-based test, although some candidates will be asked to achieve 7.0 in IELTS, 600, 250 or 100 in TOEFL. Certain courses routinely ask for these higher grades – please see the course listings for details. For the acceptability of other English language tests, please contact the Graduate Office. Your offer letter will give details of any English language conditions.

Accepting, declining or deferring your place

Please complete the yellow reply form enclosed with the offer letter and return it to the Graduate Office by the date specified in the letter: competition for places is intense and your place may not be guaranteed if we do not hear from you in time. Do not worry if you cannot meet the conditions of your offer by this date because, for example, your degree or IELTS result is not available: at this stage we simply need to know that you intend to take up your place.

Please send us notification of all appropriate results as soon as possible after you receive them.

Deadlines for receipt of applications

Very few of the postgraduate courses at the University of Bath have formal deadlines, but the high demand for places means that you are strongly advised to apply as early as possible. You should also be aware that certain funding bodies impose deadlines for receipt of applications for studentships: for some Research Councils the deadline is 1 May. In all cases, other than University Studentships, you will need to have received an offer from the University before an application can be made for funding.

Accommodation

You may apply online for accommodation once you have accepted your place. Housing options, either in University residence or the private sector, become very limited by August/September, so it is recommended that you accept your offer as early as possible and definitely by 31 July. Further details

Registration

Once your place is unconditional and before you begin your programme of study, you will be sent information about registration, which is completed via the University website. Please make sure that you read this very carefully and follow any instructions that it gives you.
