MPhil in Digital Architectonics

Qualifications and durations
Overview

The primary aim of this new programme is to encourage CAD approaches which span the disciplines of computational geometry, parametric modelling, computer graphics, architecture, structural engineering and environmental design. It prepares students for practice in the world's most innovative architectural and engineering offices, or alternatively for doctoral research in Computer-Aided Architectural Design. As a masters-level programme of supervised individual research, with supporting taught elements, it leads students to a theoretical and practical understanding of how software tools are constructed, customised and operated, combined with a critical understanding of how they contribute to current design practices. This is achieved through a combination of a case-study, supervised reading, lecture units, and a challenging practical project. The latter culminates in a written thesis describing the research leading to a software prototype, and its use to tackle a realistic design problem.

Academic entry requirements

Normally at least an upper second class honours degree in Architecture, Engineering, Computer Science or Equivalent will be required. Some experience of programming, and of architectural or structural engineering practice, is desirable. Candidates should expect to be interviewed prior to admission.

English requirements

IELTS 7.0 (with not less than 6.5 in each of the four components).
TOEFL 600 (paper-based test) or 250 (computer-based test) with a score of not less than 4 in TWE or 100 (internet-based test) with not less than 24 in each of the components.
