Professor Chris Riddoch

Professor Chris Riddoch joined the School for Health in January 2007 as Professor of Exercise Science. He has a range of collaborative research projects focusing on physical activity and health, which have received over £2m in grant funding. He was Scientific Director of the European Youth Heart Study (1998-2004), an international, multi-centre study of predictors of cardiovascular disease risk factors in children from six European countries. He has active research collaborations from the universities of Bristol, UCL, Cambridge, Glasgow and South Carolina. Professor Riddoch was Scientific Editor of the Chief Medical Officer’s report (2004) ‘At least 5 a week: evidence for the relationship between physical activity and health’ and in 2004 also gave evidence to the Health Select Committee on obesity. He is a consultant on the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition and, since 2007, an invited member of a WHO/CDC expert committee on childhood obesity. In the field of physical activity and health, Professor Riddoch has published over 50 journal articles and book chapters and one edited book Perspectives on Health and Exercise (2004). Other recent publications include “TV Viewing and Physical Activity Are Independently Associated with Metabolic Risk in Children: The European Youth Heart Study” (2006) and “Objectively Measured Physical Activity and Fat Mass in a Large Cohort of Children” (2007).
