What are the costs of postgraduate study at the University of Bath?
It is very important that you investigate all possible sources of funding for your proposed course of study as soon as you have decided what you wish to do. You will need sufficient resources to cover the tuition fees for your proposed course, and living expenses (which will include rent, heating, lighting, water, telephone, food, clothing, travelling expenses, TV licence, etc.).
Tuition fees
Tuition fees are payable on an annual basis for the majority of programmes of study at the University of Bath. You will be expected to pay at least half of the annual tuition fee due when you register, with the other half payable later in the year. There is a small administration charge for payment by instalments. The annual fees charged for postgraduate programmes in 2008 - 9 are given in the course listings in this prospectus and the most up-to-date information about fees is given in the Fees schedule.
Bench fees
Research students should also note that a training support fee may be charged for projects involving particularly expensive consumables that are not covered by the tuition fee. This fee, also commonly known as a bench fee, will be clearly indicated in any letter formally offering you a place.
Levels of tuition fee payable
In common with all other UK universities, the University of Bath charges tuition fees for most courses at two levels, depending on whether students are classed as ‘Home/EU’ or ‘Overseas’ for fees purposes. The rules for determining fees status are very complicated, but the most important factors determining your fees status are:
- whether you have the right to live permanently in the UK or the EU (settled status)
- whether you have exercised that right for the three years prior to the start of your proposed course of study.
You should note that simply holding a British passport does not automatically entitle you to the ‘home’ fees rate. If you are not sure what your fees status might be, visit the UK Council for International Student Affairs website, or contact the Graduate Office for a copy of the Fees Status Questionnaire. This questionnaire should then be completed and returned, together with supporting documentation, to the Graduate Office, University of Bath, Claverton Down, Bath BA2 7AY, UK.
