Sports Development & Recreation
Bath takes its sport very seriously. With outstanding expertise and facilities, sport is open to all, free of charge.
The Department of Sports Development and Recreation is responsible for:
- offering recreational opportunities for all members of the University to enjoy sport, regardless of ability
- supporting students who are working academically in sport-related disciplines across the University
- providing instruction and tuition in some 50 different activities
- providing a home for the family of world class sportsmen and women known as TeamBath.
Staff are active in various forms of sport-related research. The teaching and facilities staff are complimented by a team of over 30 professional coaches, working with a wide range of performers from novice to Olympic level. The Department has close ties with the Students’ Union Sports Association, advising and assisting clubs.
Facilities
The University has an extensive range of sports and recreation facilities:
- the Founders Complex – a multi-purpose hall (8 badminton courts), 4 squash courts and a 25m swimming pool
- the £30 million Sports Training Village – a floodlit 8 lane athletics track, 2 synthetic grass pitches, a 50m swimming pool, an 8 court indoor tennis hall and 8 acrylic and 2 clay outdoor tennis courts, a fitness and conditioning suite, a multi-purpose hall (12 badminton courts), a 300 sq m judo dojo, 8 fencing pistes, a 16 station air pistol range, an indoor athletics hall and a 132m sprint straight, a bobsleigh/skeleton push track, beach volleyball courts and extensive rugby and football pitches
- the Sulis Sports Club – a multi-purpose hall, a gymnasium and sauna, a snooker room, a cricket square and nets, a bowling green, 3 outdoor tennis courts, and various pitches.
The Human Performance & Fitness Centre
The Centre provides a sports science support service to any performer who feels he/she would benefit from specialist advice. There is a comprehensive fitness testing, physiotherapy and sports massage service available to all students. The Centre also provides physiological assessments, advice on appropriate training methods and preparation for competition, nutritional and dietary analysis and psychological counselling. Also available is a hydrotherapy suite and video analysis services. Doctors with specialist knowledge of sports injuries are available to advise on rehabilitation.
High Performance Sport
A number of international performers and squads have made the Campus their home to benefit from the coaching and facilities available. They form the family of sportsmen and women known as TeamBath. There are TeamBath Squads in the following sports: badminton, bobsleigh, bobskeleton, judo, hockey, football, modern pentathlon, netball, rowing, rugby, swimming, track and field, tennis, triathlon and volleyball.
Sports Scholarships and Bursaries
The University introduced the sports scholarship scheme to Britain over 25 years ago. Scholarships are designed to allow a student time to train and compete by extending their period of study by one year. Bursaries are available to offset some of the cost associated with high-level sport. For the right quality candidate, a scholarship can be made available irrespective of sporting discipline. Candidates must have acceptable academic entry qualifications and maintain a satisfactory standard throughout their course. Potential candidates should contact:
