What will studying at Bath cost?
A new home/EU student taking a degree or Foundation Degree at Bath in 2008 will pay £3,145 per year (plus inflation). Exceptions will be made for those defined by the Government as deferred entry candidates and for those taking the Foundation Year or an HND programme. Fees in these cases will be around £1200.
There will be lower fees during placement years. Most thick sandwich placement years will cost around £600. Some, with enhanced support and assessment, will cost around £1000. If a degree involves two separate placements, fees will be reduced for each of the years in which a placement falls.
You do not have to pay any fees at all up front when you start your degree. Home and EU students can take out a fee loan. Loan repayments start when you graduate and earn over £15,000 a year. You will pay around £5.00 a week for your fee loan if you earn around £18,000.
Fees for overseas students are not affected by these changes. For further information please see the The International Office web pages, Money Matters for international students.
Will there be any help with living costs from 2007?
Student loans for living expenses will be available to all Home students. They are not currently available to EU students unless you have lived in the UK for 3 years before the start of the course. How much you can borrow will depend on family income.
Government grants of up to £2,765 will be available to students from families on low incomes. The level of grant will reduce as the family income increases. Students from families with an income of around £17,910 are likely to receive the full grant. Partial grants will be available for those with family incomes between £17,910 and around £38,330. For full details please see the DfES website.
Is the University of Bath offering any additional help?
We are delighted to be offering University of Bath bursaries to all those receiving a Government grant. The table below shows roughly what you might get:

These bursaries are unlimited: we will provide them to any student assessed as eligible for Government support.

What happens in a placement year?
UK & EU Students
The fee will depend on the length of your placement and what it involved. Students on a standard full-year work or study placement (thick sandwich programmes) will pay fees of £600. Students on a full-year placement which includes a significant amount of assessed work and at least one visit from a member of University staff will pay £1000. If your programme includes two separate placements in different academic years (thin sandwich degrees) you will pay 75% of the full fee for each of the two years in which the placements occur.
Students on work-based learning programmes such as Foundation Degrees or the Social Work Degree will pay fees of £3070 (plus inflation) for each year of study; the work-based learning will not be regarded as a specific placement away from the University.
Your study placement may be covered by the Socrates-Erasmus scheme in which case fees will be paid for you.
Overseas Students
Overseas students on placement pay reduced fees for the duration of the time away from the University. Further information is available from the Student Finance Office.
How do I know the investment is worth it?
University of Bath students have excellent graduate employment rates. In 2005 we were 5th in the Sunday Times League table "Best for Graduate Level Jobs". The starting salaries our graduates secure mean that you should be well placed to meet the costs of loan repayments in the future. Bath programmes add particular value to your education through their emphasis on professional and applied learning. Those who do placements do particularly well in securing professional/management jobs.
