International Student Orientation Programme
When you begin at the University of Bath as ‘international’ students we recognise that you will all have different needs in terms of what you know and what you need to know!
You may:
- be studying in the UK for the first time
- be travelling abroad for the first time
- be living away from home for the first time
- speak English as a second, third, or even fourth language
- have studied in the UK but be new to the University of Bath
- be leaving family and friends back home
- be leaving a job to come and study here.
Depending on your experience you might want more or less introduction to our study methods in the UK, to the geography and facilities in Bath, to adapting to living on your own and to UK culture. Most of you will, however, want to make friends during your time here with students from your own country, the international community and the UK.
We work closely with Student Support
Services, academic departments and the
Students’ Union to provide you with
opportunities for finding your way at the
University of Bath and for developing
friendships – before you arrive, when you arrive, during your first week and beyond.
These are some of the activities you can expect:
Airport Welcome!
There is a FREE University bus service from Heathrow Airport to the University.
We will have students waiting to meet you at Heathrow airport during
the arrivals week in September 2009 (dates to be confirmed). You must
book as places are limited. The registration form will be online in May
2009.
We will invite you to meet current students online and then, when you arrive, through our ‘Amity’ mentoring scheme. We will email you with regular updates to help you with your preparations.
More details about the Airport Welcome, Orientation, Freshers’ Week and Amity will be posted on the International Office homepage.
For the first time this year the International Office has decided to administrate a Facebook group, which is centred around getting new arrivals to talk to each other and start making friends, before arriving at the University of Bath! A great way to get involved before leaving home.
Please note: The University of Bath does not endorse any of the advertising associated with Facebook. The service is for you to make social contacts only and any official information will be posted on the website and in direct communication with yourself.
Orientation!
A programme of activities that may be more relevant to students who come from outside the UK, including:
- campus and town tours
- the ‘International Student Meeting Point’: an information hub and a place to meet

Some of the friendly faces who will be helping you and answering your questions can be found here.
Freshers’ Week!
As a new student you are encouraged to
join Freshers’ Week activities, including:
- personal development sessions
- academic development sessions
- social events
Please note: although most ‘Orientation’
activities are free, there is a charge for
some Freshers’ Week events.
Details about the 2009 Orientation Programme will be on this website in May 2009.
