Social trips - Semester2, 2008

Join other international students on one of the International Office's trips around the UK! Trips are for all international students at the University of Bath.

Tickets are available from David Young in the International Office Wessex House 2.15. Tickets are available for Exeter, Stonehenge & Salisbury and Wells from Monday 28 January and for Stourhead, Westonbirt Arboretum and Brighton from Monday 3 March.

Please bring the exact money. Tickets for all events are limited and are purchased on a first come, first served basis. Refunds are not possible unless the trips are cancelled by the International Office.

Saturday 9 February
Exeter - SOLD OUT
Leave Uni bus stop at 08:00 and Avon Street bus stop at 08:15. Leave Exeter at 17:00
Tickets are £8 per student

Exeter is an historic Cathedral and University City. It is also the County town of Devon and is a business, legal, retail, tourist and commercial centre for the region. With a touch of buzzing big city atmosphere, a large student population and a thriving arts scene, Exeter is one of the liveliest cities in the south-west.

Stonehenge and Salisbury
Leave Uni bus stop at 09:00 and Avon Street 09:15. Leave Salisbury at 17:00
Tickets are £7 per student - entrance to Stonehenge not included – student £4.70 (bring ID!)

Stonehenge is a World-famous prehistoric monument built as a ceremonial centre. Situated in the vast plain, surrounded by hundreds of round barrows, or burial mounds, the Stonehenge site is truly impressive, and all the more so, the closer you approach. Salisbury Cathedral is one of the finest medieval cathedrals in Britain. It is the mother church of the Salisbury Diocese, an area that covers most of the counties of Wiltshire and Dorset.

Saturday 8 March
Wells Cathedral
Leave Uni bus stop at 13:30 and Avon Street at 13:45. Leave Wells at 18:30.
Tickets are £6 per student (including guided tour and tea)

This trip is run with the Chaplaincy and will include a guided tour and the chance to experience choral evensong. Wells is one of England's smaller cathedrals. By the middle of the 13th century the imposing west front had been decorated with a vast array of statues. This outstanding collection of Kings, saints, angels and biblical characters is believed to be the largest collection of medieval sculptures in the world.

Saturday 12 April
Stourhead
Leave Uni bus stop at 11:00 and Avon Street at 11:15. Leave Stourhead at 17:00.
Tickets are £5 per student (including entrance fee)

Visit this celebrated landscape garden and Palladian mansion. The garden is an outstanding example of the English landscape style, laid out between 1741 and 1780. Classical temples, including the Pantheon and Temple of Apollo, are set around the central lake at the end of a series of vistas, which change as you move around the paths and through the magnificent woodland with its extensive collection of exotic trees. You will also see the mansion, which was home to the Hoare family, owners of Britain’s only independent private bank surviving to the present.

Westonbirt Arboretum and Cheltenham
Leave Uni bus stop at 09:00 and Avon Street at 09:15. Leave Cheltenham at 17:30

An arboretum is a place where trees are grown for study and display, and Westonbirt Arboretum is home to some of the rarest, most beautiful trees in the world - including the Japanese Maple Collection. There are 600 glorious, easy-to-stroll Cotswold acres there and it is an unforgettable experience in all seasons. Remember that Westonbirt is an outdoor venue and that suitable clothing and shoes for walking on the grass should be worn.

Similarly to Bath, Cheltenham is a spa town and most of the town centre lies within a conservation area of outstanding national importance. Regency town houses, historic promenades, squares and terraces. With its award-winning gardens, impressive range of stylish shops and restaurants, and its festivals of horse racing, music and literature, Cheltenham is an extremely cosmopolitan and beautiful Cotswold town.

Saturday and Sunday 26/27 April
Weekend Trip to Cornwall - SOLD OUT

The International Office has organised a weekend trip to Cornwall for international students on 26 – 27 April. Visits will include the Eden Project, St. Ives, Land’s End and St. Michael’s Mount, with overnight accommodation at a youth hostel in the beautiful town of St Ives.

The cost is £60 and tickets are available from the Registry Enquiries Office, Wessex House 2.12c. There are only a limited number of tickets, on a first come first served basis. They will sell out fast!

Tickets are £10 per student

England’s loveliest and liveliest city by the sea! Brighton is fun, cosmopolitan and uniquely eccentric. See the Regency architecture, pleasure pier, specialist shops, cobbled Lanes, pavement cafés and the lively arts scene. Everything’s in walking distance, so use your free time to explore and enjoy.
