Trip to Brighton - July 08

It was an early start as students from Bath woke to a beautiful day of sunshine in preparation for the International Office trip to Brighton. Famous for its elegant pier, and beautiful Regency architecture, the seaside town has much to offer in the way of sophisticated arts and culture, simple holiday fun, unusual shopping.

On the way, we passed through some stunning examples of British scenery, from the green lanes and hills of Wiltshire to the magnificent spire of Salisbury Cathedral and the impressive Norman Castles along the South Downs including Arundel castle, built in the eleventh century.

On our arrival, we were assaulted by the delightful smells and flavours of the sea side: pink candy floss, shops filled with multi-coloured sweets in glass jars of blue, yellow, red and green, swirls of lolly pops and piles of coconut delight like something out of a children’s story book, together with the salty sea air and greasy fish and chip bars.

The students set off with a varied list of priorities. Some sauntered and walked happily along the beach, others found a place of splendour amongst the twirling minarets and onion shaped domes of the Royal Pavilion. Some had a mission to find some traditional fish and chip, whilst others wandered along the popular arcades along the pier, tempted by the traditional sweet shops and merry-go- round rides. The rolling waves and stoney pebble beach were not enough to tempt anyone to swim. They chose rather to laze on the blue and white deck chairs, until they discovered that they had to pay!

At the end of the day we all returned for a final group photo beside the pier. All, that is, except for those who had been distracted by the ice-creams but who returned with a happy smile, just in time to get the coach home.
