AMITY
Mentor programme for new students
REGISTRATION FOR AMITY 2008 IS NOW CLOSED.
Here in the International Office we aim to offer a top quality service. To help new international students settle in, we offer a free mentor/buddy programme, called AMITY.
"The Amity programme offered me not only the chance to learn English but also the chance to make friends and learn this country's culture"
Settling in quickly and feeling comfortable is crucial to getting the most out of your studies here and enjoying life in the UK.
Joining AMITY as a mentee will help you to achieve this by giving you the opportunity to link with current British students or international students who have been studying in the UK for at least 5 years and who will act as your mentor/buddy.
You will be attending social events and meetings with your mentor and other mentees, finding out what is available to you at the University and get the chance to discuss issues with your mentor like study skills used in the UK, culture, customs and festivals celebrated in the UK.
In previous years many long lasting friendships have started during Amity - if you are a new international student coming to Bath, why not join-in? It could change your whole experience in the UK!
Who will my mentor be?
Your mentor will be either a British student or an international student that has been in the UK for 5 years or more. All our mentors have received training on mentoring and on cultural awareness and many of them have also spent time as international students in another country and understand the issues you will be facing. Note that your mentor won't necessarily be from your academic department - the aim of Amity is to help you settle into UK life!

How many mentees (new international students) does each mentor have?
You may be in a group of 1 - 5 mentees.
When will I meet my mentor?
Your mentor will contact you by email before you leave your country so that you can ask any pre-arrival questions and put your mind at ease. You will then meet them at the Welcome Party, organised by the International Office. There you will have the opportunity to get to know your mentor and the other members of the programme.
At the Welcome Party, you will arrange four lunchtime meetings with your mentor.
What commitment does it involve?
When you register, it is important that you are committed to taking part in the programme. When you arrive in the UK, you may find that you are very busy, however we strongly advise you to make every effort to attend the Welcome Party so that you can meet your mentor and arrange a time to see them again.
You will then meet with your mentor and other mentees 4 times, for an hour each time. At the end of the programme, we ask that you come to a Closing Party to say goodbye to everyone and provide feedback on your experiences - a free buffet will be provided! How do I register for Amity?
