Working
National Insurance (NI)
If you are employed in the UK, you will pay the same National Insurance (NI) contribution as a UK citizen. There is no legal requirement for you to have a National Insurance (NI) number before you start working. Once you have accepted or started work you must apply for an NI number. To do this:
If you have a job on campus
- Call into JobLink, 1E 3.11 and collect a National Insurance Number Application Form
- Complete this form, photocopy the documents listed on page 9 and ask your employer to sign and stamp page 8
- Return the form to Glasgow Benefits Centre (address on front page of form).
The Benefits Centre will process your paperwork and write to you informing you of your new NI number. When you receive your NI number, please inform JobLink: joblink@bath.ac.uk. JobLink will add your NI number to your personnel record and it should then appear on your next payslip. This process normally takes about two weeks.
If you have a job off campus
Tel: Jobcentre Plus on 0845 6000643 for an appointment at Bristol Jobcentre, Eagle House, St Stephen's St, Bristol. Take a letter from your employer confirming your job, your passport, a Student Status letter and proof of your address. It is worthwhile asking whether they will reimburse your travel expenses.
