Bringing your family
Should I bring my family to Bath?
Many students coming to Bath will face a difficult decision: should I bring my family with me? Before making a decision think carefully about things, including the finances and welfare of your partner and children - will they adapt to life in the UK?
Plan Ahead!
If you do decide to bring your family you must make preparations well in advance. Please do not hesitate to contact the International Office at any stage; we will be more than happy to provide you with information and advice.
Family immigration
EU/EEA/Swiss Nationals
- If you and your partner and children are EU/EEA/Swiss nationals then they are free to accompany you to the UK.
- If you are EU/EEA/Swiss but your partner and children are not EEA or Swiss nationals they should apply at the British Embassy or High Commission where they are living for an EEA family permit before travelling.
All other students
If you are coming for more than six months you and your family must apply for entry clearance / visas. If you are coming for less than six months we recommend that you and your family all obtain entry clearance / visas from the British Mission in your own country before travelling to the UK. Your partner can live with you as a dependant in the UK for the duration of your studies if you can prove:
- you are married or civil partners
- you will live together in a continuing relationship
- you have enough money to keep yourselves
- your partner intends to leave the UK at the end of your stay
Your children may live with you as your dependants if you can show that they:
- are your children
- are under 18, or entered the UK under 18 and have current leave to stay
- are unmarried and without independent family lives
- will be adequately accommodated and maintained
- intend to leave the UK at the end of the stay
