Exploring the UK
Travelling away from the UK
If you wish to travel in and out of the UK during your stay as a student, there are a number of things to consider:
Do I need a visa for the country I’m going to?
The International Office will help you find out and you can also visit the country’s embassy website. You will need to contact the embassy and apply for a visa. If you have only 3 months left on your UK visa/leave to remain you may be refused a visa for the country you want to visit.
Is my passport valid for the time I’m travelling?
If it’s due to expire while you are away, you will need to apply to your own embassy in London for a new one. The ISAs can offer advice but cannot arrange visas for students. For help arranging a visa you may wish to try www.thamesconsular.com – they charge for this service. If you wish to travel outside the UK it’s important to plan ahead!
Coming back into the UK
All students should carry the following documentation when reentering the UK:
- A letter from the University confirming that you are still registered as a full-time student. Get one from the Registry Enquiries Office in Wessex House 2.12c.
- Evidence of sufficient funding to support yourself and any dependants – recent bank statements or a sponsor’s letter.
