What to bring to Bath
Clothing
Students dress very informally in the UK but bring formal clothes for special events. You may also want to bring a national costume for International Student evenings and for the Mayor of Bath’s reception for International Students.
Other useful items
- Immunisation records and any medical certificates
- Passport photos; you’ll need them when you first arrive
- Photocopies of important documents, eg. your passport.
Sending Luggage Ahead
Check the baggage allowance of the airline and insure your belongings against loss or damage. Please note that the University cannot accept any responsibility for items sent ahead that are lost or damaged.
If you will be living off-campus address your luggage to:

Things you will need in your University residence
Everyone needs to provide their own towels, personal crockery, cutlery and cookware. You can buy them cheaply in Bath.
On campus you will be provided with a mattress, duvet, 2 pillows and bed linen (2 sheets, 2 pillow covers and a duvet cover). One sheet and one pillowcase are laundered weekly.
Off-campus you will be provided with a mattress, duvet and two pillows but not bed linen (sheets, pillow covers or duvet covers). You will need to bring your own bed clothes for a single bed, or buy a bed-pack from the Accommodation Services Centre, Carpenter House, for approx. £11.75.
Kitchens
Each kitchen has a kettle, iron and ironing-board. Vacuum cleaners can be borrowed from the housekeepers. Most kitchens in the off-campus residences are also supplied with a rice cooker.
For more information see the online accommodation brochure.
Customs: what can you bring to the UK?
Be careful to check what you can and cannot bring to the UK. Even things like milk and meat products are prohibited.
Full details can be found at: www.defra.gov.uk
From outside the EU
If your usual residence is outside the EU and you are coming to Bath as a student you can import the following items for your own personal use:
- Clothing and household linen
- Articles for use in your studies
- Things for furnishing your room.
You do not need to pay duty and tax on these items, nor declare them to Customs, as long as:
- They are for your use
- They are brought into the UK with you
- You do not sell them.
Travel Insurance
It’s a good idea to have travel insurance for your journey to the UK and for about a week after arrival, to cover any loss or damage to personal property as well as any medical costs.
