A box of essentials
All-unied.com are a company that will deliver directly to your study bedroom a box of essentials needed when you move into a hall of residence. The University will supply you with bedding but All-unied offer other things for bedroom and kitchen at around £70 – and save you shopping! Visit their website to find out more.
Sending luggage
If you wish to send luggage to the University please arrange for it to arrive AFTER your own arrival. Mark luggage with your name and approximate date you will be arriving in Bath, eg. ‘Arriving September 2008’. If you already know where you will be living on-campus, write your room number and building name on the luggage.
Voltage
UK is 240 volts. You can buy adaptors here.
Books
Books are heavy! Buy them at the campus book shop or in Bath.
Keep receipts!
It’s a good idea to bring receipts for any electrical equipment that you bring with you – such as a laptop – showing when and where you bought it. If personal items are sent by post complete a Customs form (C3). You can get this from the shipping agent. Make it clear on the form that the goods are for personal use only and that you are a full-time student in the UK.
Import duty
If you think you’ve been wrongly charged for importing goods contact HM Revenue and Customs on 0845 0109000 or visit the International Office.

Things you will need in your University residence

Everyone needs to provide their own towels, personal crockery, cutlery and cookware. You can buy them cheaply in Bath.

On campus you will be provided with a mattress, duvet, 2 pillows and bed linen (2 sheets, 2 pillow covers and a duvet cover). One sheet and one pillowcase are laundered weekly.

Off-campus you will be provided with a mattress, duvet and two pillows but not bed linen (sheets, pillow covers or duvet covers). You will need to bring your own bed clothes for a single bed, or buy a bed-pack from the Accommodation Services Centre, Carpenter House, for approx. £11.75.

Kitchens

Each kitchen has a kettle, iron and ironing-board. Vacuum cleaners can be borrowed from the housekeepers. Most kitchens in the off-campus residences are also supplied with a rice cooker.

For more information see the online accommodation brochure.

Customs: what can you bring to the UK?

Be careful to check what you can and cannot bring to the UK. Even things like milk and meat products are prohibited.

Full details can be found at: www.defra.gov.uk

From outside the EU

If your usual residence is outside the EU and you are coming to Bath as a student you can import the following items for your own personal use:

  1. Clothing and household linen
  2. Articles for use in your studies
  3. Things for furnishing your room.

You do not need to pay duty and tax on these items, nor declare them to Customs, as long as:

  1. They are for your use
  2. They are brought into the UK with you
  3. You do not sell them.

Travel Insurance

It’s a good idea to have travel insurance for your journey to the UK and for about a week after arrival, to cover any loss or damage to personal property as well as any medical costs.
