Television Licensing

If you have a television you must have a TV licence – even in a hall of residence. Using a TV without a licence is a criminal offence and could lead to a fine of up to £1000.

Licences are available online from TV Licencing and from post offices. Colour TV is £139.50 a year, black and white TV £44. You can pay monthly or quarterly by direct debit. For further details you may also call 0844 800 6790.

A more detailed page for information on TV licences can be found at the Student Accommodation website.

If you are still unsure about whether you need a TV licence there is a site for all students here.

Even though the TV licence is for a minimum of 12 months, it is possible to get a refund for every three months that it is not used for. For example, if you buy your licence in October and then move out of accommodation in June, you will not need the licence for July, August and September. Instructions on how to claim a refund can be found here.
