University of Bath Scholarships Programme 2009

How many scholarships are there?

There are 75 scholarships for taught postgraduate students.

Who are the scholarships for?

Any international students (and any students from the Channel Islands or Isle of Man) who are paying overseas fees and who are applying for a full-time taught masters course for September 2009 can apply. However, do make sure that you read the criteria for the award of a scholarship very carefully to assess your chances. Of course, as a minimum requirement all our scholarships holders must have excellent academic grades in their previous studies.

How much is each scholarship?

Each taught postgraduate scholarship is worth £3000 and will be in the form of a discount in tuition fees. The taught postgraduate scholarships are for one year only.

How do I apply?

First of all you need to have formally accepted an offer from us. The offer can be unconditional or conditional. Then, you need to have completed the application form and sent it to us before 30 June 2009.

What is the closing date?

The closing date for applications is 30 June, so we are now no longer taking applications for entry this year.

How does the university choose the candidates?

We will mainly use the information you provide in the separate scholarship application form to judge your application. We will give priority for scholarships to candidates according to the categories below. Of course, if you belong in more than one category then your chances of a scholarship are increased.

Category 1-Top Priority

Our aim is to encourage excellent students to choose the University of Bath. We know that many scholarship organisations both in the UK and in your own country will award partial scholarships to the best students and our objective is to assist you to study at Bath by increasing the funding you have already received up to the value of £3000.

Category 1 candidates are from any country and are already holding a partial scholarship from another official scholarship organisation (either in the UK or in their own country). If you already have a partial scholarship from another organisation for part of your tuition fees, you can combine this scholarship with a University of Bath one provided that it does not equal more than the cost of your tuition fees.

However, we will not give a University of Bath scholarship to anyone who already has a full award (from another organisation) to pay for their tuition fees.

Category 2 –Second Priority

Our aim is to encourage students from all over the world to study at Bath and to build a truly international community in all our subjects of study. We think it is important that you get to study and socialise with students from many different countries so we want to encourage students from countries outside our top markets to apply to Bath.

For 2009 we particularly encourage excellent candidates from the following countries and regions to apply for scholarships: Latin America, Nigeria, Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan and Central Asia (Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan) and Vietnam.

Category 3 –Third Priority

Our aim is to encourage and support the work of our colleagues in key schools and educational agencies around the world. Therefore, we will give priority to candidates who have been nominated by their school or by one of our official representatives overseas.

Do I need to have firmly accepted an offer from Bath in order to be considered for a scholarship?

Yes. Remember that you can formally accept any offer: conditional or unconditional.

What happens if I have a conditional offer?

If you have a conditional offer, then of course any scholarship offer will also be conditional until you have met the conditions that you need for entry to Bath.

Can I have more than one scholarship?

If you already have a partial scholarship from another organisation (including another University of Bath scholarship such as an Alumni or Departmental award) for part of your tuition fees, you can combine this scholarship with a University of Bath one provided that it does not equal more than the cost of your tuition fees.

However, we will not give a University of Bath scholarship to anyone who already has a full award (from another organisation) to pay for their tuition fees.

What happens if my financial situation changes?

If your financial situation changes, then the University reserves the right to reconsider the award. For example: in the case that you were awarded a full fee scholarship from another organisation after the University of Bath had shortlisted you for its own scholarship, you would no longer be eligible for a University of Bath scholarship.

When do I find out the results?

We will notify all the successful candidates by 31 July 2009 at the latest.

Other types of financial assistance

The best advice is to start planning your finances early and to check out what is available in your own country as well as the UK. In general, there is much more support for post-graduate study, particularly at research level, than for undergraduate study.

The University of Bath is offering five undergraduate scholarships worth £2,500 for each year of the course, provided that the student successfully completes each year and meets the minimum progression requirements.

The application process is the same as for post-graduate students except that the closing date is 31 August 200. Three of the scholarships are set aside for undergraduate students from South Asia (India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) and the other two scholarships are open to students who progress from the University of Bath Foundation Year into an undergraduate degree at the University of Bath.

If you are a research student, you will first need a formal offer of admission to the University of Bath before you apply for funding. You also need to apply early as many scholarships will be allocated by April. To find out more about ORS and other research funding please contact the Graduate Office.
