Inviting family & friends
Visa Nationals
If you are a visa national and family or friends want to visit you in the UK, they need a visa from a British Mission. Visitors must:
- genuinely seeking entry for less than 6 months
- intend to leave at the end of their visit
- not intend to take employment
- not intend to study at a state school
- have enough money to house and maintain themselves or
- be housed and maintained by relatives or friends
- be able to meet the costs of the return or onward journey.
The Letter of Invitation
Before your visitors travel to the UK you will need to send them an invitation letter from the Registry Enquiries Office(Wessex House 2.12c) proving your status as a full-time student and the details of who you are inviting.

Sending documents to your visitors
Before your visitors come to the UK you must send them:
- The Letter of Invitation from the registry
- A personal letter of invitation written by you (see template
) - Copies of your passport pages
- Copies of your bank statements or sponsors' letters
- Proof of accommodation - a copy of your tenancy contract or a hotel booking.
What your visitors need to carry in hand luggage
- All the above documents you sent them and
- evidence of returning home, eg. details of work or business
- proof of salary or financial independence
- a return ticket or money to buy one
- your contact telephone number.
