BA in Politics and a European Language
These four-year degree programmes were introduced following the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the end of the East-West-division, and the reconstitution of Europe which is working towards its new identity as a major player in the global world order. Both subjects of the degree programmes are taught in the Department of European Studies and Modern Languages. This facilitates a unique degree of integration between the two subjects. The programmes enable students to master one European language and acquire the knowledge and analytical skills necessary to understand the social, political and economic changes which are currently affecting all European countries, not just the new democracies in the East. The BA Politics and a European Language is a well-established degree programme that is becoming increasingly popular in recent years. We have therefore extended our range of pathways. We now offer:
- BA French and Politics RL12
- BA German and Politics RL22
- BA Italian and Politics RL32
- BA Russian and Politics RL72
- BA Spanish and Politics RL42
For the 2009 intake we have a total of 25 places available. We very carefully consider who we offer a place. Undoubtedly, good A-Level grades (or equivalent) are essential, but we are keen to take a range of other criteria into consideration as well. Our main objective is to match students with the right degree programme for their particular background and interests.
For French and Spanish our applicants need a good A-Level (Grade A or equivalent) in the respective language. Russian and Italian can be studied either post A-Level or ab initio. In the case of Russian and Italian ab initio, this means from scratch. (An A or the equivalent is normally required for German and Politics).
The degree is designed to appeal to students who wish to combine the study of Politics with that of a European Language. In an increasingly globalised world with ever closer relations between European states and the international community at large, this is an extremely important and promising combination of academic disciplines.
The particular features of the course here at Bath are:
- the special focus on one particular European language in its social, political, economic and cultural setting;
- the emphasis on Europe as a whole, including Eastern Europe, in the context of world affairs and the globalising international economy;
- the interdisciplinary approach to the study of Europe, including perspectives from Political Science, International Relations, Political Economy and Cultural Studies;
- the opportunity to pursue the study of another language alongside your main programme;
- the strongly international flavour of the academic community in the department;
- the year abroad which allows you to enhance your language skills and familiarise yourself with your selected country's culture.

Course entry requirements: 3 A levels or 2 A levels and 2 AS levels or equivalent qualifications from the UK or abroad. For French/Politics an A level in the language. For German/Politics, Italian/Politics and Russian/Politics there are separate post-A-level and ab initio streams. Ab initio candidates for German are required to have gained a good Grade in the language at GCSE level. Candidates in Russian and Italian are normally expected to have demonstrated some capacity to learn a foreign language, not necessarily Italian or Russian.
