Biology
C111 BSc (4-year thick sandwich)
Overview
Our Biology programme ranges from the molecular to the population level and incorporates a large element of choice. Specialities include organismal interrelationships, particularly pathogenicity and behaviour of micro-organisms and their hosts, developmental biology and genomic evolution.
Course structure
The course is designed to be as flexible as possible and to meet your needs as your interest in Biochemistry develops. After gaining a strong, broad base in the common first year, a vast majority of the units that comprise the course are optional, meaning you can customise the content of your degree to suit your interests.
For further information about the course content and structure see the programme summary (PDF), course programme catalogue and programme specification (PDF), linked to on the right hand menu of this page.
Placements
Students have the opportunity to complete a placement in the third year of their course. These are a 12 month period of employment in bioscience research, administration or management that are increasingly valued by employers. We run more placements than any other life science department in the UK, and opportunities exist both at home and abroad, including placements at top UK companies such as GlaxoSmithKline, research institutes, and overseas universities such as Harvard or other Ivy League institutions.
Course aims
Our Biology programmes aim to:
- offer a stimulating environment that will encourage students to develop their full academic potential
- instruct students in ways of approaching and analysing problems, so that they can reach considered and appropriate conclusions, and communicate these conclusions to others
- equip students with skills that are both of value to future employment in biology and transferable to other avenues of employment
Careers
Our graduates are highly sought after in the graduate market place and many go on to research careers through further study.
Typical employers include: universities; pharmaceutical industries; veterinary and medical services; animal nutrition and fisheries research; food manufacture, preparation and preservation industries; the water industry; microbiological and agrochemical industries; environment and conservation industries; biotechnology industries and agricultural, medical and chemical laboratories.
