Overview

Biochemistry provides a fundamental understanding at the molecular level of all life processes. With an increasing emphasis on front-line research as the course progresses, this course will allow students to enter a wide variety of academic, industrial and medically-related careers.

Course structure

The course is designed to be as flexible as possible and to meet your needs as your interest in Biochemistry develops. After gaining a strong, broad base in the common first year, a vast majority of the units that comprise the course are optional, meaning you can customise the content of your degree to suit your interests.

For further information about the course content and structure see the programme summary (PDF), course programme catalogue and programme specification (PDF), linked to on the right hand menu of this page.

Placements

In the BSc students have the opportunity to complete a 12 month placement in the third year of their course. In the Mbiochem two six-month placements are taken - one in each of the second and third year. These are periods of employment in bioscience research, administration or management that are increasingly valued by employers. We run more placements than any other life science department in the UK, and opportunities exist both at home and abroad, including placements at top UK companies such as GlaxoSmithKline, research institutes, and overseas universities such as Harvard or other Ivy League institutions.
